With every new restaurant I review, I start to inch farther and farther away from Berkeley and more into Rockridge. This was totally not on purpose-Rockridge just has a LOT of nice restaurants that have a LOT of interesting menus.

Soi 4 was actually recommended by an older Berkeley native that is well seasoned in the restaurant scene in the bay area. This “Bangkok Eatery” (as self-proclaimed on their website) was definitely not afraid to explore unique flavor profiles or season aggressively on top of their Thai palette. However, the spiciness of the dishes was quite underwhelming compared to the golden reputation of Thai spiciness. I would describe this restaurant as more “bougie American-Thai” as opposed to authentic Thai-but I personally don’t really mind that. Either way, the food was up there on the quality scale. The gai pik khing was probably my favorite-intensly salty and sweet, with the Indian roti appetizer in a close second (but actually though, order it).

I also just wanted to point out that this place is great for date night. The lighting is soft and dim, and the sleek decor with the sharply dressed waiters (one of whom was the most handsome man I’d ever seen) create a naturally romantic ambiance.

My sprinkle of sugar: Definitely on the pricier side for us college students, but also definitely worth the buck. 4 out of 5. -C
